Depending on the terms set forth in the signed engagement agreement, you should be able to still collect some money.  If it was a fixed fee matter, many engagment agreements have wording regarding cancelled matters where a portion of the fixed fee can be collected based on time spent on the matter.

Without a signed engagement agreement, you can try to collect something, but there is not much recourse if they don’t want to pay.

If a real estate transaction is cancelled after significant legal work has already been completed, the attorney may still be entitled to bill for the services performed, depending on the engagement terms and program guidelines.
