I keep a prepared list of future polls for this AI Lounge that I rotate through, but the responses to last week’s poll gave me pause. It was so interesting. The majority of you said that your current lawyerly (or legal staff!) opinion about legal AI as you’re seeing it be used is that it’s very helpful, but it scares you.

Honestly, you’re so real for that. I get scared of it, too, and I have a rather unique perspective on it, because I have the opportunity to use it in my admittedly limited legal practice these days, and also I get to see it being developed and refined in real time, as Smokeball continues to perfect its Archie AI. I’ve used legal AI tools, I’ve played around a lot with our own Archie, and I routinely meet with my lovely colleagues like @Eric Gloyd  and @AmandaW and @maria.murillo and @Reena Jailwala and Matt G to help configure prompt libraries, understand new features, and see how it all fits together when it goes to market and hits y’all’s desktops. It is a really great opportunity to both learn and advise, and I think it’s helping me develop a well-rounded perspective. Especially since I also hit up my colleague @JKibler to discuss ethical concerns and competency surrounding AI, which he has discussed at length in one of our Archie Firesides. In addition to that, I also sit down in a quiet space and write my own thoughts and reflections, because I am aware that all of us as practicing lawyers are building the ethical and compliant use of legal AI in real time, and this is a great opportunity for us all to shape future legal practice.

So I hear you - it’s hard to deny how helpful AI is, especially when you use it to summarize numerous witness statements and identify inconsistencies, or to find the exact 17-seconds of action you need in 10 hours of body worn camera footage, but it’s also scary seeing Archie, for example, do something in 2 minutes that would have taken me 6 hours to do as a baby lawyer. That tension is poignant, especially given so many other things that are happening in the country and the world right now.

If you missed last week’s poll, you’re welcome to chime in below about what your honest opinion about legal AI is right now, based on what you know, have seen, have read about, and/or have tried out yourself. I’m interested in the vibes.

And I want to dig into them more this week. So for this week’s poll --

What is driving your unease about AI in legal practice more?
