Matter types

Hello.  We are newer to Smokeball and I’m running into issues.  In our old system we tracked our various revenue streams (ex. city, county, state, etc.).  We had dashboards every month that would show us how much revenue was coming from each client type.  Categorizing them by Smokeball’s pre-configured matter types will not work for us because many of our client types don’t fall into those categories.  Does anyone else track their different revenue streams and if so, how do you do it in Smokeball?  It’s been a bit frustrating for us.

That does sound frustrating. I know you’ve probably already seen this but I’ll post just in case - there might be something on our Firm Reporting page that could help. This is something your account manager would likely be able to help with, too. I’ll see if I can find the right person to reach out to you to help!

Thank you for the reply, but the firm reporting page doesn’t help either.  Since Smokeball doesn’t let us categorize our client types, it won’t pull the revenue from the various types.  Unless you can think of someway I can do this.

Hm, this might also be a Support Ticket to request a product feature if there’s no other way we can work around it.

OK Jenny, this is what I got for you! 

I discussed your issue with a number of different departments here at Smokeball. Theoretically, I get it - you want to run revenue reports based on things like this is how much we get from this kind of business/org, and this one, etc. But you’re right, that kind of niche customization can be tricky with the pre-configured options in Smokeball. 

I discussed it all between our onboarding specialist, Trey, our data migrations wizard, Katy, many members of our Client Success team, a team that is devoted to helping our people do what they want to do with our product, and other departments, to see if we can figure this out.

The usual answer would be process change, but we liked how granular you guys got with your insights, and since Smokeball is all about supporting efficiency and personalization, we put our heads together for what else could help here. 

Trey mentioned that he had been brainstorming about your issues to figure out a solution, and wanted to connect with our billing specialists to see if there were some work arounds that can support your reporting needs the way you want them. He is personally working on putting in a custom report request to help your firm with this. Hopefully with some elbow grease it can be done!

I’m shouting out Trey specifically for his help and eagerness on this. We can’t accommodate every single such feature or customization request ASAP, but Trey cares about your firm and this problem, and when we can jump on something, we always do. Thanks for posting about this, especially here as we try to ramp up Community again and bring some value to our users here. You helped us put our heads together and make Smokeball even better.
