Exporting Time Entries from Smokeball and Importing into Tabs3

Hello Community! I am with a firm that is newly adopting Smokeball. We are still planning to use Tabs3 for the short term, while we get up to speed, and will likely be switching to Quickbooks later to make the time importing easier.

In the short term, we will be exporting time entries from Smokeball (where all attorneys will be tracking their time) and then importing it into Tabs3, where we will do our billing and invoicing.

Are there any other firms that currently do this? I would love to connect with you just to understand how to do this process smoothly and easily. Any tips would be appreciated.

Hello @DPestell

I can't think of anyone that does this. As long as you are able to get the information in a usable format for Tabs3, it should be okay. If you want to work with one of the billing specialists to assist you in determining which report will work best, please reach out to your onboarding specialist or account manager to sign up for some time with us.

Hello, we used TABs prior to Smokeball. Hopefully you found the answer already, but if not...It is a bit tedious to set up, but you can create an excel template in TABs and “program” TABs by mapping each excel column to a timeslip field in TABs. (For example, column A is the client number, column B is hours worked, column C is timekeeper, column D is the timeslip description, etc.). Once this is set up in TABs you can save it an use it over and over. I am not sure how you have your matter numbers/internal references set up in Smokeball, so I would make sure that the export report you intend to use includes a column that can pull down the client/matter number into its own excel column since this client/matter number column is how TABs will know where to upload the timeslip.
